Burlesque FAQ's, Terms and conditions.
A burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which, in turn, is derived from the Italian burla – a joke, ridicule or mockery.
Burlesque was seen in works by Shakespeare in the late 17th century and would become popular in theatres, bars with striptease and variety shows from the 1860’s - 1940’s. It became popular again in Hollywood during the golden age with many films trying to recreate the spirit of burlesque with movies such as ‘Cabaret’ and ‘All That Jazz’ featuring Burlesque styled scenes. These films featured the pioneers of Burlesque: Gypsy Rose Lee, Sally Rand, Tempest Storm, Lili St. Cyr, Blaze Starr, Ann Corio and Margie Hart.
In more recent times we have seen the revival of burlesque again in the 1990’s with a neo burlesque and modern burlesque scene forming. Neo Burlesque includes but is not limited now to slapstick comedy, parody, striptease, boylesque, cabaret, performance art. These styles encapsulate the essence of ‘the art of tease’ and often contain layers to be revealed and in some cases no nudity at all. You will still see Burlesque performed at Variety shows and theatre shows as well in Club’s, private parties, Hens and stag parties. Burlesque has now become so popular that there are conferences, work shops, schools and performers all throughout Aotearoa and the world.
For me Burlesque is a performance art. It has helped me to be empowered and given me so much joy to take my higher self to stage and entertain and enchant audiences with my signature sass, cheekiness and sexy comedic style. I love the build up as each layer comes off and creating a 'Holy fuck' factor on stage. Burlesque in my eyes is also a way to celebrate your uniqueness, cultivate body autonomy and inspire and uplift the audience watching.
